Making our road systems better is a great cause to wrap a business around. But as a family-owned business, there are other, more personal efforts that we support and encourage our friends to join us.

The core values of the Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson's Research are "optimism, urgency, resourcefulness, collaboration, accountability and persistence". Those are exactly the qualities our founder Fred Dabney used to build Slurry Pavers from one truck to many. And for a guy who was known for his raucous laughter and his ability to turn a room full of strangers into a room full of friends, developing a disease like Parkinson's was particularly difficult. We'd like to see the day when no one has to lose the ability light up a room because of Parkinson's and why we support them.

In their own words, the The Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson's Research exists "to accelerate the next generation of Parkinson’s disease (PD) treatments. In practice, that means identifying and funding projects most vital to patients; spearheading solutions around seemingly intractable field-wide challenges; coordinating and streamlining the efforts of multiple, often disparate, teams; and doing whatever it takes to drive faster knowledge turns for the benefit of every life touched by PD."

In June of 2019, we didn't just lose our boss. We lost a father, a brother, and a friend. Phil Tarsovich faced "Lou Gehrig's Disease" the way he faced life - with grit, tenacity, strength and dignity. Every day, more than 31,000 Americans face a new day of challenges with this rare but incurable, debilitating and terminal disease. We'd like to make sure their days are better and ALS's days are numbered.

This years Richmond Walk To Defeat ALS was a huge success. With Slurry Pavers' support, and the efforts of all of our team members, Team Tarso raised over $10,000. We hope to see you at next years event.

For most of us, it’s hard to imagine working in an environment where four to eighty thousand pounds of glass, plastic and metal fly by within inches of us at speeds of 35 to 80 miles per hour - or more. But that’s what it’s like for thousands of our neighbors each day as they work to build, maintain and preserve our road networks. The unfortunate reality of working in these conditions is that serious injury and death is just one "texting while driving" away.

Last year, two thirds of road construction companies reported accidents in their work zones. In 2021 there were more than 100,000 work zone crashes – that’s about 274 a day - resulting in more than 42,000 injuries and nearly 1000 deaths.*

It’s these kind of facts that make the inherent danger of what we do really hit home. And that’s why we’re an annual supporter of The ATSSA Foundation.

The ATSSA Foundation promotes roadway safety across America. Programs include those to promote road safety to kids, as well as the National Work Zone Memorial, a traveling memorial to teach safety and honor workers who lost their lives, and the Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship Fund which provides scholarships to the children of those who died making our roads better.
